The Scandinavian Design Philosophy
What is the Scandinavian Design famous for?
Scandinavian design is characterised by functional minimalism. Clean lines, practical layouts and high-quality materials are the keywords defining this style. To me, it’s the materials and items that makes a space feel like a home.
Is Scandi Design just about painting everything white?
No, far from it… Scandinavia gets very dark in the winter, so Scandinavian Design is about utilising the natural light as much as possible in interior design. Therefore, we often use neutral colours and white in particular to reflect the lights around the room. While Sydney-siders sometimes seek out shade, the opposite tends to be the case in Denmark.
However, Scandinavian Designers often utilise contrast in designs. I love incorporating natural materials into my interior design and sometimes bring in darker shades of wood, such as teak, or rocks and cement to create contrasts in a home. Bringing in softer elements, such as natural wool and textures, can help soften up these harsh surfaces and create dimensions for the natural and artificial light to bounce around.
