Must-Haves in Your Luxury Bathroom Design
Is there such a thing as a good Danish bathroom design? Well, yes and no… Danish expectations for a bathroom are similar to those of Australians: we want a beautiful spa-like experience, but with plenty of storage for towels and those toiletries we all need daily. So, if there are not really any differences between the two, then why write a blog post about it, Nadia? Well… I often get phone calls from clients who didn’t sign on a designer before starting their renovation, and now regret it and need help. Or even worse, they’ve signed on a designer but aren’t happy with the results they’ve delivered. So, I’ve put together a list of 6 items that are needed in a luxury bathroom design.
Plenty of storage
Storage solutions are SO important in our homes. The bathroom is no exception! Have you ever been to a hotel where there is absolutely no storage in the bathroom, and it suddenly becomes very evident when all your serums and moisturisers need a spot on the vanity? It looks messy (even if they’re all from the same brand!). To keep the clean lines and a tidy vanity, make sure you have plenty of storage in the bathroom. This includes storage for towels, hairdryers and other electrical equipment, toiletries, sanitary items and toilet paper.
In-built GPOs
Talking about keeping the vanity tidy, let’s hide those GPOs. They can be built into drawers, cabinets, the vanity or even on the wall but with a little cover over, so they don’t ruin the overall aestethics. And let’s make sure we have plenty of them, so you can dry your hair while the curling iron is warming up.
Luxury bathtubs
Even if you prefer a shower over a bath, nothing says spa experience like a bathtub. Bathtubs come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Even if your house is your forever home, having a bath in each bathroom adds value to your home and will be a big advantage in your future buyer’s eyes.
Separate Water Closet
Whether the Water Closet is completely separate from your bathroom or integrated and hidden behind a door, there is something rather luxurious about a bathroom without a toilet. Toilets are big and clunky and easily ruin the spa feel, so let’s hide them away so the other features of your bathroom can shine. It also allows it to be used while your partner is taking a shower, which is a win for all of us during our busy morning routines.
Skylights
I genuinely feel like no words are needed for this one… I should clarify that this doesn’t replace wall windows, but there’s something absolutely fabulous about showering under the ‘open sky’. The sunshine in the daytime or the star-gazing at night will definitely make you feel at ease. On top, skylights provide extra opportunities for ventilation and circulation of air, which is incredibly important for our wet rooms here in humid Sydney.
Quality materials
Spend extra on premium materials. Your cleaner will thank you for it (as their work will be far easier), and you’ll be less frustrated with fingerprints, etc., between your cleaners stopping by. High-quality materials will last you a lifetime and add to the luxury spa feel. I love using natural stone, hand-crafted tiles and mouth-blown glass sconces for a softer feel in the space. Let’s be honest: there are a lot of ‘hard’ materials in any bathroom, so it’s important to consider ways to soften it up, which isn’t just throwing textiles (towels) into the mix. Softening the space through curves, patterns, and materials will bring the design together perfectly, so you can have a day at the spa every day!
